Deputy Prime Minister Ahmad Zahid Hamidi said Budget 2016 is indeed a budget for the Sarawak election.

"That is a very positive comment from them (the opposition); it is indeed," Zahid said at a press conference in the Parliament lobby after the budget was tabled.

He was responding to the opposition's remarks that the budget is meant to help the BN government win the Sarawak state elections.

The Sarawak state election - expected to be held next year - will be the first time that Chief Minister Adenan Satem is leading BN Sarawak.

Meanwhile, Zahid brushed off the opposition’s action in flashing placards asking Najib where the RM2.6 billion was.

The sum refers to the “donation” allegedly received by the premier and desposited into his personal accounts.

Najib has repeatedly denied taking any public money for personal use.

"Last time, they (Opposition) showed their orange 'Buku Jingga'," he said in reference to the opposition waving their election manifesto at Najib, who was wearing an orange baju Melayu when tabling Budget 2014.

Zahid then rubbished the Opposition shadow budget, calling it “unrealistic”.

"They couldn't rationalise their revenue versus expenditure [...] it was unrealistic, (despite) so many economic experts preparing the Pakatan Harapan budget," he said.

Among the highlights of the opposition's alternative budget was the effective scrapping of the goods and services tax, by zero-rating all goods and services.
