154 Umno chiefs want action on errant party leaders

At least 154 out of 191 Umno division chiefs want the party's supreme council to take action against errant party leaders, according to an internal poll.

The poll conducted among 170 division leaders in an exclusive group on the chat app Telegram , does not provide names of the errant leaders.

However, The Star reported that Kapar Umno chief Faizal Abdullah did not refute that the leaders in question were former prime minister Dr Mahathir Mohamad, Umno deputy president Muhyiddin Yassin and vice-president Shafie Apdal.

“The overwhelming sentiment in the group was that, enough is enough,” Faizal was quoted as saying by the English daily.

He said the poll started not long after Muhyiddin ( photo ) branded them as cowards for not backing him up on critical issues.

"They were upset that Muhyiddin had called us cowards just because we don’t agree with him and choose to support the president,” Faizal said.

The first vote, he said, was cast by Umno Penampang chief John Ambrose. The Penampang division had previously passed a motion to censure Muhyiddin for failing to uphold the party’s reputation and integrity.

“We are tired of the drama. They keep telling us they want to unite the party but their action is something else.

“It is like a marriage gone wrong, quarrelling in front of the children and the neighbours," Faizal added.

Up to supreme council to take action

The chat group's administrator, Umno Temerloh chief Sharkar Shamsuddin, said it was now up to the supreme council to take the necessary action.

Yesterday, it was reported that Muhyiddin's camp was bracing for the Umno number two to get suspended.

This was after Umno secretary-general Tengku Adnan Tengku Mansor revealed that seven party leaders under observation for disciplinary action may soon be suspended from the party and their positions.

The investigation into the seven had been completed, and Tengku Adnan said it was now up to the supreme council to make a decision.

Muhyiddin was in late July axed as deputy prime minister after criticising Prime Minister Najib Abdul Razak's brainchild 1MDB.
