Umno deputy president Muhyiddin Yassin will be speaking at the Kelab Sultan Sulaiman in Kampung Baru tomorrow night.

This is some consolation to his supporters as he is prevented from speaking at the opening of the Umno Wanita, Youth and Puteri Annual General Assembly on Dec 8.

An aide to Muhyiddin confirmed with Malaysiakini that the event will be held at 8.30pm, following rumours on social media.

"Yes, the event is confirmed," said an aide to the Pagoh MP.

Muhyiddin had previously said he would still be attending the AGM although his presence may be reduced to being a mere "stump on stage".

It was earlier reported that Muhyiddin has also been prevented from delivering his winding-up speech as Umno deputy president but the party's supreme council is expected to make its final decision on the matter on Wednesday.

Separately, an aide to Umno vice-president Shafie Apdal also said that the Semporna MP would be present to support Muhyiddin at tomorrow night’s event.

“Muhyiddin would be speaking and he (Shafie) will come and show support,” he told Malaysiakini .

In an interview with The Malay Mail , Umno vice-president Ahmad Zahid Hamidi had reportedly downplayed concerns of a possible split within the party if the supreme council eventually decided to sack Najib’s critics.

He pointed out that Umno had survived a similar situation in 1998 when former premier Dr Mahathir Mohamad had sacked PKR de facto leader Anwar Ibrahim, both as deputy prime minister and Umno deputy president.
