New Kedah Menteri Besar Ahmad Bashah Md Hanipah went to watch a football match in Alor Setar last night – and got a cold reception from fans.

Bashah, who also is the new president of the Kedah Football Association (Kedah FA), was there to watch the match between Kedah and Kelantan state football teams.

However, videos of the match showed him being booed by fans both inside and outside the Darul Aman Stadium venue.

This was purportedly for his takeover of the menteri besar post from his predecessor Mukhriz Mahathir, who is also the previous Kedah FA president.

The first video is a two minute 50 second clip showing the match's opening ceremony, where Bashah was booed for about 20 seconds when his name was mentioned over the stadium's public address system.

According to the video's caption, he was booed not only once or twice, but at each mention of his name.

The second video lasted only 14 seconds, and purportedly shows Bashah being booed while we was driven away from the stadium in his car.

It is the first time in history where a Kedah menteri besar is treated like this. Shame, shame...

The people have become more discerning. If you would dare to do what you did, then prepare to face the music,” read the caption in the video uploaded by the netizen McTheory Croniez.

The incident was also discussed on Darul Aman Stadium's Facebook page, where responses ranged from comments saying that 'someone' has been booed, to outright ridicule of Bashah's predicament or hearty congratulations to the fans for booing him.

He gets booed outside; he gets booed inside. Ouch. Hurts,” one netizen commented.

Others expressed sympathy for the menteri besar, although perhaps not without a tinge of sarcasm.

I really sympathise with him. Stay strong Mat Lena (sleepy head),” another netizen remarked.

Bashah became menteri besar on Feb 3 when Mukhriz stepped down after two weeks of political turmoil in the state.

The saga was seen by political observers as a proxy war between Prime Minister Najib Abdul Razak and his predecessor Dr Mahathir Mohamad.

Shortly after becoming the new menteri besar and Kedah FA president, a number of companies have withdrawn their sponsorship deals with the Kedah state team Red Eagles, which in turn sparked anxiety among fans.

Malaysiakini has contacted Bashah for comment through his aide, and is awaiting for a response.
