Selangor Menteri Besar Azmin Ali has recorded an approval rating of 65 percent in the state, according to a survey by independent pollster Merdeka Center.

He got the highest rating from the Malay respondents (69 percent), followed by the Indians (66 percent).

The June 6 survey among Selangor public, however, showed that only 54 percent of Chinese respondents as being satisfied with Azmin's performance as MB.

The poll was conducted via telephone from May 28 to June 5 among 1,011 voters over the age of 20 in Selangor.

Interestingly, a survey conducted by the same pollster in August 2014 had showed that Azmin fared the worst with only six percent wanting him as the state's chief executive during the 'Kajang move'.

The latest survey also showed that the Chinese respondents were quite reserved on Azmin's performance compared with other ethnic groups.

Forty-four percent of Chinese respondents felt that Selangor was heading in the right direction, as compared with 68 percent of Malays and 64 percent of Indians.

Others felt the state government was heading in the wrong direction because of the economic condition, namely high cost of living, lack of money, GST, rising house prices and unemployment.

However, 53 percent of Chinese respondents are satisfied with the transformation and changes brought by Azmin in managing the state.

The survey further showed an overwhelming 72 percent of Malays and 66 percent Indians are satisfied with the transformation and changes.

Only 56 percent Chinese respondents agreed that the state government as being people-centric, while 74 percent of Malays felt that it was people-friendly.

However, 68 percent Chinese respondents have given their approval of the state government's performance in developing Selangor.

Azmin, who was sworn in as mentri besar on Sept 2014, has been accepted among the younger generation, particularly those aged between 30 and 39 (70 percent), as well as the age group of between 20 and 29 (65 percent).

His approval rating was particularly high among the higher educated groups, such as diploma holders (70 percent) and degree holders and above (67 percent).

About 66 percent respondents with internet access approved of him while only 56 percent with no internet access gave their approval.
