Capability is an important criteria in determining the direction of a party and the extent of grassroots support it can muster, said a political analyst.

And according to Prof Jeniri Amir, Muhyiddin Yassin, who is slated to head a new party, trailed his predecessor Anwar Ibrahim in this aspect.

Therefore, the analyst does not believe the new party would have a major impact and would only attract support from a handful of individuals who are disappointed with Umno.

Furthermore, Jeniri said history has shown that the lifespan of Umno splinter parties are relatively short as in the case of Semangat 46.

“I believe the new splinter party will not last long since it only houses those who are frustrated with the current leadership of (Umno),” he told Sinar Harian.

The professor said the lack of capable leaders played a role in moving the party forward.

“The new party needs those who are really capable to get public support and not only disappointed Umno members,” he added.

Jeniri also pointed out that the party which is exclusive to bumiputera would further divide the Malays, who now either support the opposition or government.

“This will only weaken the Malays,” he said.

While Muhyiddin is slated to be president, former premier Dr Mahathir Mohamad would serve as its chairperson.

Mahathir’s son Mukhriz is tipped to be the treasurer.
