Gua Musang MP Tengku Razaleigh Hamzah said the Kelantan government must pressure Putrajaya to amend the Federal Constitution to help the state's finances.

The long-serving lawmaker said that the state government currently has no other source of income apart from logging.

"I'm not blaming the state government... The state has no money. Thus I propose that the Federal Constitution be amended in order to channel more (national) revenue to the state," said Tengku Razaleigh when met at the Parliament lobby today.

He said this when asked to comment on logging activity in the Gua Musang area which had led to conflicts between the Orang Asli community and loggers.

These incidents took place late last month after villagers from Pos Tohoi and Pos Simpor attempted to prevent loggers from entering what was claimed to be their land.

Asked whether the Kelantan government should prioritise pressing Putrajaya on revenue sharing over the ongoing campaign to enhance the syariah courts' powers, Tengku Razaleigh appeared to concur.

"There are many issues the state government should be discussing (with Putrajaya). People are getting tired (of the fact that) there is no (economic) development (or) passive development in the state.

"A lot of youth are leaving the state because the state government is incapable of providing them with the necessary amenities," he said.

Kelantan is the among the poorest state in Malaysia according to GDP per capita. The Khazanah Research Institute's study this year revealed that Kelantan has the lowest household income among 13 states.
