I read with curiosity the proposals made by the National Consultative Committee on Political Financing. I will just concentrate on two aspects. The first was to scrap the spending limit imposed on parties and candidates. The second was to introduce anti-victimisation mechanisms to address the concerns of the opposition that their funders might be discriminated against when donations were made public.

It is amusing, in fact comical, when I read the piece on “futuristic thinking” and “thinking outside the box” by Mohd Irwan Serigar Abdullah, the Treasury secretary-general (Irwan: Futuristic streak needed to survive in today’s world). It is as if he was speaking in total oblivion about what is happening in the country today.

When a politician, more so also a government leader, makes a statement, usually it has connotations going beyond its content. It reflects his mental make-up, his intelligence, the values that he holds dear, and his political persuasion or orientation.

Fighting to get rid of an incumbent PM or government is never easy, given the massive power of incumbency. If by now we still fail to appreciate the difficulties faced by those who try to do so, we must be quite blind and ignorant.
