In conjunction with International Migrants Day, Parti Sosialis Malaysia (PSM) urges the government to implement the policies contained in its national economic development plan, the 11th Malaysia Plan, and not allow itself to be overruled by corporate interests. The government has drawn up a policy that if implemented will bring about a huge improvement in the current situation of migrant labour, and generally labour as a whole in the country.

A recent roundtable discussion on the need for a comprehensive policy on labour migration reveals how much agreement there is among stakeholders on the fundamentals of labour migration.

There are many contentious issues associated with labour migration in Malaysia, and given the significance of migrant workers to the economy, and their numbers, it is not a problem we can afford to ignore. Migrant workers are 33 percent of our workforce, and 20 percent of our population. More than half the migrant workforce in the country is undocumented.

COMMENT Another option is to legalise the almost 3m undocumented workers.
