I refer to the Malaysiakini report Will Ong quit as promised?

The reaction of the MCA president after the outcome of the EGM proved that the delegates who voted at the EGM were right and wise. As the Chinese saying goes, ‘the tail finally appeared’.

The president and all office-bearers of the MCA were voted in to hold office by the same delegates and if what and whom they voted in counted then, by the same token, the latest outcome at the EGM should also count.

If Ong Tee Keat had been a gentleman and was magnanimous enough, he should have immediately offered to resign as soon as the results of the EGM were announced even though there was no constitutional clause to compel him to do so.

By so doing, he would at least regain some measure of respect, though he lost support.

A vote of no-confidence is simply a vote of rejection and Ong should step down honourably and gracefully.

The need to have a presidential council meeting or such on whether he should resign or stay on does not arise as he was not appointed by them.

MCA is already facing rejection from all quarters and any unreasonable decision by Ong will simply accelerate and enhance this rejection further.

Some quarters have even gone as far as saying that MCA is ‘irrelevant’ in the current political scenario.

The best option for MCA now is to have fresh elections so that whoever is voted in would enjoy a majority support.
