I refer to the letter 'Allah' issue: Zulkifli Noordin is spot on .
‘Why do Christian missionaries confuse the public with the term 'Allah'? As a Sarawakian, I have seen Christian missionaries 'going active' in the public places in Kuching. Is this not wrong according to our constitution? What is the punishment for this wrongdoing?’
It seems that the writer was not thinking with the facts. For his information, Sarawak is officially a secular state. Islam is not accorded any special status in the state constitution. The freedom to propagate non-Islamic religions to Muslims in Sarawak and her neighbour Sabah is guaranteed by the Malaysia Agreement 1963. Until this agreement is reviewed, this guarantee shall remain in both states.
As for his accusation that Christian missionaries ‘going active’ in the public places in Kuching, may I ask him if he is sure they are approaching Muslims? In Sabah, for example, there are Christians who go from house to house to spread the Gospel, but before they talk about Jesus to the occupants, they would first enquire if they (the occupants) are Muslims. Only if they are sure the occupants of the house are not Muslims will they talk about Jesus and the Gospel.
A Christian who talks about his religion to a Muslim must be mad, as most Christians know the repercussions of propagating other faiths to Muslims. Even without anti-apostasy laws, it is plain dangerous to proselytise to Muslims as Muslims are extremely sensitive about their religion.
And many Christians are aware of Muslim perception of their religion. Mainstream churches also discourage their congregations from evangelising amongst Muslims.
Since the writer asked ‘is this not wrong?’ when referring to proslytisation by so-called Christian missionaries, my mind was immediately attracted to the word ‘wrong’. I am sure many Christians would also like to ask this question.
For example, is it not wrong for the Federal Court to declare that Lina Joy was a Muslim despite her openly declaring herself a Christian? Is it not wrong for a Hindu mother to be prevented from teaching her children about the Hindu faith?
Is it not wrong for a court to give custody of toddlers to a father who has abandoned his wife and converted to a new faith to be with another woman? Is it not wrong to storm a civil forum where people are discussing remedies about legal problems affecting their lives?
Is it not wrong to halt a religious service during its climax by the police? Is it not wrong for a Muslim to consume the body of Christ and then spit out and photograph it?
The writer should be doing more thinking. With characters like him and Zulkifli Noordin around, Malaysia is definitely headed in the wrong direction. I wonder if he has ever looked into the mirror to see if there is anything wrong about him.
