The various media are responsibly doing their fair share of reporting on public objections to legalising sports betting. In fact, all religions and their faithful are strongly against gambling of any sort.
Unfortunately, despite the overflowing feedback from the citizenry, the federal government remains mum on the issue. Meanwhile Vincent Tan bulldozes through with all kinds of carrots.
The government through its Umno-led BN force can marshal thousands to protest Israel's brutality. But when it comes to its own citizens' cries for help to revoke gambling licenses, it cannot even put one man on the street to protest.
On the contrary, the government approves such 'legalised' gambling with the argument that even if it is not legalised, illegal betting will thrive. And adds ‘legalised betting will arrest illegal gambling activities’. What a rubbish rhetoric!
If that is the ruling government's logic, then why not also legalise prostitution and drug-dealing to curb the illicit activities in these two areas?.
And for Vincent Tan to say that he will contribute millions from the proceeds of the sales of his sports betting is an insult to Malaysians who live by the principle of honour. Let us face the reality squarely: How can you justify your seeming CSR role when you have robbed the poor man's ringgit in a sinful manner and pretend to give it back?
With immediacy, all the opposition parties must now collaborate with all the religious bodies and their respective faithful as well as all NGO and human rights bodies to stage a massive, nationwide rally to protest the government's move to legalise sports betting.
And God-fearing organisations that preach integrity and honesty to their employees should participate by contributing to such a mammoth rally with cash donations and by allowing time off for their employees to participate in the movement.
We as Malaysians who never miss a chance to parade to the world that we have values and have religion above politics, must now show the world that we oppose sports gambling for the love of families, God and religion.
If we Malaysians through the organised abilities of all opposition party members and religious organisations as well as all NGOs can come together in full force, we will not only win this war against gambling but also strike the death knell to Vincent Tan's operations - let alone all forms of legalised and illegal gambling.
Malaysians must stand for this universal cause in the interest of families and humanity.
