Let's face the fact — corruption exists in Malaysia. However, it is heartening to see that society (and the media) are more willing to discuss this issue in the open, especially where public figures are concerned.

The fact that the Fire Department director-general managed to organise a grand wedding for his son, feting thousands of people in a stadium and another reception for hundreds of guests in a five-star hotel, does raise the public's curiosity.

How is it possible for a civil servant to be so lavish? Also, was there any misuse of department's facilities, which are meant to save lives?

No, the fire chief should not just brush it aside by saying that it was the workers who wanted to help out. He should not hide behind the 'Bomba boleh' rhetoric nor complain about the public outcry, as the taxpayers pay his salary. Have they been ripped off?

He should clear his name, or else the Fire Department will be viewed with contempt.
