I sincerely congratulate you on your sweeping victory in Ipoh Timor. Being a resident of Ipoh, I hope your victory here would signify a change for all of us - not just a change in our parliamentary representative, but a start for a general change in Malaysian politics.

Being from the younger generation of Malaysians studying overseas, I often get disenchanted by the way Malaysian politics work. Risking sounding extremely nave, I find that instead of relating to issues germane to the welfare of the people or the progress of the nation, politics here tends to boil down to torrents of pejoratives thrown at each other.

More often than not, the choice for voters seems to be that of the lesser of two evils; of who could undermine the other more. This is essentially how I perceive politics has ever been in our country. Oppositions are mere aberrations and most subscribe to the fact that they only need to put a few oppositions in to keep the unshakable ruling government in check.

But this, I believe, does not have to be so. Instead of making this victory a repetition of past experiences of DAP, it could be an opportunity for the spread of an objective awareness. I am not propounding the implementation of drastic actions, but rather on more emphasis on long-term awareness of the public on what really matters or at least on things which are more objective (as opposed to political parties bickering), long lasting and less confrontational.

Having experienced the government education system firsthand and from what I have learned thus far, I truly believe in the importance of a true Bangsa Malaysia and I will make sure that if I were to have children, they will learn of what I believe in and hopefully so will their children from them. If DAP can genuinely instil such concept into a small percentage of the people in Ipoh now, the long-term changes would be great indeed.

Therefore, I urge you to try to provide a true change. If you succeed, this victory of Ipoh Timor will indeed be a victory for all Malaysians.
