Letter writer Westminster got it all wrong with regards to Malaysia's future prime ministers.

For the far, foreseeable future, Malaysia's prime minister will continue to be a Malay Muslim male politician from Umno. Such is the reality on the ground. Factor in demographics, and there is no way this is going to change.

Look at Singapore - the supposed bastion of meritocracy and equal opportunity. The Singapore PM has been, from Day One, a male Chinese Singaporean from the PAP. Is that likely to change any time soon? Given the political realities in Singapore, it is very, very unlikely.

Should Malaysia be held to a higher standard in this area than Singapore - a country that likes to portray itself as an example for the region in anything and everything?

Or look at the current US presidential race. The contenders for president and vice-president are all white Anglo-Saxon Christians. Will a Hispanic American, a Black American or an Asian American ever be a presidential or vice-presidential candidate? Again, it is highly unlikely.

I could go on and on about Australia, the UK or Indonesia etc. The arguments and the political scenarios are the same - the majority rules.

Political realities? Demographics? Chauvinism?

No neat and tidy interpretations of constitutional law versus convention here. Only the rough- and-tumble and mutual accommodation of the democratic political process.
