I do not know what all the fuss is about a policeman having RM34 million in assets. Looking at the matter objectively, I feel the press and the Malaysian public have entered into a 'feeding frenzy' over this cop and his RM34 million.

It all started when the report of the Royal Commission To Enhance The Operation and Management of the Royal Malaysian Police came out. Is it perceived that a policeman must live a frugal life and it is a sin to have so much money in his account?

Before we go about crucifying this poor chap, let it be made known that in this country, you are innocent until proven guilty.

How many times have we read in the papers that the Attorney-General's Chambers could not prosecute due to a lack of evidence, although one may think that some parties are guilty as sin. The courts are even obliged to release a person if there is insufficient proof to convict a person.

I feel this particular retired policeman should be congratulated for amassing such wealth and the public has no right to come to the conclusion that it is scandalous for a cop to be able to amass such riches. There is rule of law in this country and the press have no right to judge this cop or for that matter, suggest or make conjectures that the wealth he acquired is illegal.

If at all the attorney-general wants to treat this case as a priority, then I would remind all Malaysians to recall that fateful day when our prime minister came into power and when he promised a clean-up.

And where is that clean-up of corruption that was promised? All we have read is of one minister from East Malaysia and Eric Chia being charged. What happened to the other cases which were supposed to be under investigation?

I beseech the government not to practise double standards. Leave the poor cop alone; he does not have any political clout to defend himself. Look here, this is Malaysia and if a policeman can amass RM34 million, then he should be made a shining example of and be given a Datukship or a Tan Sri-ship.

The Royal Malaysian Police Cooperative should invite him to give a motivational talk on 'How to be a millionaire cop' or perhaps even commission him to write a book.
