MCA cannot shift the goal posts after scoring own goals

LETTER | MCA deputy president Wee Ka Siong, the infamous critic of the Penang government's undersea tunnel project, is like the proverbial Don Quixote who fights imaginary enemies thinking that he is on a moral or righteous crusade to rid Penang of its evils.

His latest salvo against the Penang state government is asking how much CRCC was paid for its role in undertaking the undersea tunnel project since the agreement was inked in the aftermath of the last general election in 2013. His earlier quarrel with the Penang state government was whether CRCC was the main contractor or shareholder in the SPV, the special purpose vehicle.

The Penang state government has categorically denied that CRCC was the shareholder by the main contractor engaged by Zenith Construction (SPV) to undertake the tunnel project. To prove this point, the Penang state government has given the evidence where CRCC has signed in two places attesting to its role as the main contractor.

Strangely enough, there was an ironical twist to the situation. MCA president Liow Tiong Lai (photo) during his recent visit to China met up with some officials of the CRCC who affirmed that their company was the main contractor.

Whether Liow realised it or not, he scored his own goal against MCA. The admission of the CRCC officials in the presence of Liow apparently caught Wee unaware and since then he has changed the position of his new goal post.

Wee has conveniently altered his position and is now asking the Penang state government how much it has paid to CRCC for the project. It has been reiterated a number of times that the Penang state government has not paid a single cent for the tunnel project. The project has yet to receive the blessing of the federal government in the form of an environmental impact assessment although studies related to the project have been nearly completed.

Although the questions raised by Wee (photo) and others have been fully answered not once but many times, he continues to raise ludicrous questions thinking that these will spur the MACC for further and more intensive investigations of those involved in the massive project. Again, as I have said earlier, it is like a dog in the manger story.

It has come to a point the very survival of MCA seems to be predicated on the demise of the DAP-led government in Penang. There appears to be a reasoning that if MCA can bring down the popularly elected government helmed by DAP, then its service will be remembered by Umno and rewarded accordingly. Such is the tragic state of MCA, a party that had humble beginnings but has reached a point of no return in the arena of Malaysian politics.

It is rather unfortunate that MCA seems to thrive on the road paved by MACC in unleashing the investigations against those involved in the project. It has given some much-needed credence for MCA to embark on its own witch-hunt against the Penang state government. Despite the attacks based on half-truths, distortion of facts, lies, MCA leaders like Wee have not established an iota of truth on the tunnel project to date. Even the MACC investigations, I believe, have not really unearthed anything substantial on the tunnel project other than harassing those who have been called in for questioning.

Wee is also a great prevaricator. When confronted and exposed of his lies, he has the habit of not admitting his mistake but moves on to other areas with relative ease. In a political game of wits, he is a master at changing goal posts to win the ultimate game.

But the funny part is that every time he changes the goal post to ensure his victory, things, on the contrary, take place to shame him. Yes, he can change his goal posts as he likes, but if the truth is not on the side of the MCA, then the whole exercise of changing goal posts is a futile one.

But in the ultimate sense, Wee, given his desperate position in MCA, seems to be good at inventing and fighting his imaginary enemies. He must realise at some point as to why he is undertaking this tirade or witch-hunt against infrastructure development that might deny the people of Penang their much-needed development.
