Our land is for the people, not self-enrichment

LETTER | The current lawsuits by a carpet merchant over land sales is a clear affirmation of how ordinary, hardworking citizens of the B40 and the middle class are being robbed of affordable housing.

The case in court over a former prime minister and his spouse and some high-ranking inviduals brings into the public space shocking revelations.

Whether vindicated or otherwise, as our law of the land states one is innocent until and unless proven guilty, one thing is certain.

In Malaysia land grabbing, land profiteering and land for power and control advantages must be widespread, unchecked over decades of the previous monopoly government.

Even in East Malaysia till this day, we witness how ancestral access and rights to native land is being grabbed, devastated and never returned to our original inhabitants of this country.

In Peninsular Malaysia, for as long as land trading for self and speedy enrichment is the name of the game, we will never see a reasonable, affordable roof over every citizen a reality in the decades ahead of us.

As the powers that be that remain in control continue to see land sales or grabbing as a legitimate right of way, and not see the management of this limited resource as a bestowed responsibility to return to society what rightfully belongs to the struggles of humanity, we will never be a socially integrated, economically resilient, and especially a happy nation of people.

When will all these be exposed to the hilt? When will we ever wake up to the reality that despite all our religiosity and emphasis on rukuns, even the very square foot we stand on, this beloved country has become an opportunity for self-enrichment.

Such acts of land grabs and profiteering are indeed a crime against nationhood.
