LETTER | We are surprised that MTUC secretary-general J Solomon is disappointed by the group of trade unions and NGOs calling upon Human Resources Minister M Kulasegaran to be transparent before tabling the Bill on Employment Act (Amendments) to Parliament.

If Solomon is not happy with the group calling upon Kulasegaran to be open and transparent before submitting the bill to Parliament, then he has no business to call others ‘sour grapes’.

In fact, we had examined the proposal submitted by Solomon, which was done without the endorsement of the MTUC General Council, which is the supreme authority of the organisation, and we find the proposal grossly weak and inadequate.

So, the members of the General Council took the opportunity provided by the Human Resources Ministry to submit the proposal to the ministry, after consultation with more than 44 trade unions, the majority of which are General Council members of MTUC.

Solomon had nothing to do with this consultation conducted by the group of affiliates.

He has made MTUC dysfunctional. He has not called any General Council meeting since January 2018 to discuss the proposed amendments to the Employment Act.

The document was submitted by Solomon on his own and it has nothing to do with the General Council members of the MTUC.
