The Rentakini's article entitled The unpredictable Kelantanese quoted cultural proponent Eddin Khoo as saying that William Roff had described Kelantan as 'of sandy beaches, black magic, and beautiful women'.
We wish to clarify that Roff has at no instance used exactly those words.
In Roff's editorial preface to the book 'Kelantan: Religion, Society and Politics in a Malay State' (pp. v-vi), he wrote: 'Kelantan has come for many Malaysians and others to symbolise remoteness and beauty (of women, arts and crafts, and casuarina fringed beaches) in about equal proportions, allied with what is regarded as economic backwardness and religious authoritarianism'.
