LETTER | Tamil poet laureate Kannadasan will live on for generations because of the absolute truth embedded in his words and writings.

As the centenary of Kaviarasu Kannadasan (real name Muthiah Sathappan Chettiar, born on June 24, 1927) approaches, hundreds of literature enthusiasts gathered for a grand celebration at Chettiar's Hall in Kuala Lumpur last Sunday, June 21.

The event served as a true "Tamil elixir", deeply immersing attendees in the timeless literary treasures of the revered poet laureate.

Driven by his steadfast principle that the ultimate purpose of poetry is to speak the truth, Kannadasan uncompromisingly infused life's raw realities and deep philosophies into his songs and speeches.

Kannadasan was a multifaceted genius. A poet laureate, lyricist, author, film producer, and philosopher. His verses explored human emotions with unparalleled intimacy, depth, and literary flair.

By capturing the very essence of life, death, and everything in between, his immortal work ultimately proved his own famous declaration true - "I am permanent, I have no destruction, and death cannot touch me under any circumstances."

The milestone event was championed by MIC deputy president M Saravanan, whose deep knowledge and passion for literature have continuously promoted the Tamil language on global stages.

The vibrant tribute featured prestigious awards recognising the outstanding contributions of local personalities to Tamil language and literature.

Saravanan stated that "Kannadasan’s legacy remains the standard for Tamil poetry and cinematic song writing.

"He did not merely write lyrics. He structured a profound philosophical framework for generations of Tamils, teaching them how to love, grieve, celebrate, and reflect."
