I refer to the Malaysiakini report Minister: Police chose 'best' option .

It saddens me as a Malaysian citizen foremost to see the mode of arrest on Anwar Ibrahim. The mode of arrest should be condemned as it shows how the police have been acting in a highhanded manner.

It is also a disgrace for me as a grassroots Umno member to see my leaders in Umno and the government supporting such a move by the police force when in fact they should be condemning it. I am not talking about whether or not Anwar is guilty or the sodomy charge against him, but of the way the police handled the situation. This has caused us Malaysian citizens to lose faith in the police force.

CID Director Mohd Bakri Zinin was quoted as saying, "I would like to advise Anwar to come and present himself here at anytime tomorrow before 2pm. Failing which, the police will execute any necessary actions within the due process of law." He was quoted in all major newspapers. Yet what happened? Anwar was arrested at 12.55pm, before the 2pm dateline.

Later, Mohd Bakri Zinin was quoted as saying "He was arrested as we had reason to believe he was not going to show up". How did he know that Anwar was not going to show up? Even a primary school boy can tell you that the police can arrest him after the 2pm deadline is up, never mind if there is a commotion. The police have used force before to arrest people so what commotion is he talking about? This is all nonsense and only fools will believe such an excuse. Perhaps he thinks we swallow this story. I think he is greatly mistaken.

DSP Jude Pereira was assured that Anwar would turn up yet a few minutes later, Anwar was arrested in spite of this assurance. In other words, police assurance cannot be trusted as they can turn around and do the reverse. So much for the police force being trustworthy. Sorry to say, that kind of trust is gone. You are sending us a clear message that the word of the police force is not to be trusted.

Inspector-General of Police Musa Hassan tried to justify the police action saying: "The police know what they are doing and are only carrying out their duties in investigating this case." Is he sure the police know what they are doing or he is just cooking up lame excuses to cover up the incompetence of his people?

No wonder we have so many issues with the police force lately. I hope and pray that the minister wakes up and does something before the police force becomes a laughing stock of the nation and a disgrace in the eyes of the international community.

Deputy Inspector-General of Police Ismail Omar supported the move by his boss and was quoted as saying that the police had acted on "credible and reasonable evidence" that Anwar was not going to show up at the Kuala Lumpur police headquarters as promised. The same excuse given by Musa Hassan. What else can I say, or more importantly, what can the general public say about the credibility of the police force?

Home Minister Syed Hamid Albar, I am saddened that one of my leaders, instead of reprimanding the police force for their blunder and for failing to honour their word, instead supported the police move. This is sending a wrong message out to all the people and to all Malaysians that it is okay to follow the example set by the police force. What a disgrace.

Our leaders in Umno and the government have condemned Anwar before he is proven guilty by a court of law. Looks like we have a lot of people in the country who are better than the police and judges in deciding a case. We profess our Islamic faith yet before a fellow Muslim is judged, our leaders already judge him.

I am not attacking anybody in particular, but quoting the words of our leaders in the police force and the government. If the police force doesn't buck up, the general population is going to distrust the police force and their ability to act wisely, justly and with honour.

I implore our leaders in the police to change and wake up to the deteriorating situation in the force and to act wisely and justly. As for the leaders in Umno, if you continue to act in this manner, rest assured that you will lose more seats in the next general election and more states to the opposition.

Lastly, I feel sad that Umno, with whom I have spent so many years as a grassroots member, may no longer be a relevant party to champion our Malay rights due to the fact that it is losing grassroots support.
