A mother has lodged a police report against the police for allegedly abusing her son while he was under police custody.

“He was kicked on his back, hit on the back of his head and hit with a rubber hose until he could not take the pain,” wrote the 49-year-old housewife in her police report filed at the Klang district police headquarters this morning.

She said that the details of the assault was related to her by her son, who is currently warded at the Tengku Ampuan Rahimah hospital, Klang.

Her police report also disputed the Klang OCPD Mohamad Mat Yusop’s claim that the detainee sustained injuries during a scuffle when he was arrested.

“If that is true, why wasn’t he taken to the hospital immediately?” she asked in her police report. She was accompanied by her lawyer N Surendran to the police station.

The police report also called for an independent body to be established to probe the case to avoid involvement of the Klang police, whose members were allegedly part of the assault.

“I seek justice for my son and for harsh actions be taken against the police personnel found guilty (of hurting) my son,” she said.

'As a mother, I feel very sad'

Speaking to reporters later, the distraught mother said that she hopes the police would release her son soon so he can go back to his three-month-old daughter.

“I feel disappointed. Why was my son beaten until he slipped into a coma? When I went to see him (on April 8), his face was swollen. As a mother, I feel very sad,” she said.

The detainee was arrested in Jalan Kebun for an alleged drug offence on April 7, but was hospitalised hours later in the intensive care unit (ICU) after allegedly drinking paint thinner and becoming unconscious.

The Klang police have claimed that he was arrested for an alleged drug offence under Section 39(A) of the Dangerous Drugs Act.

Meanwhile, a crowd of about 50 people gathered in front of the police station today to show their support for the detainee.

The people comprised mostly of the Makkal Sakhti movement supporters and Pakatan Rakyat coalition party members. Many held placards in front of the police station denouncing the police for the alleged assault.

Meanwhile, Kapar MP S Manikavasagam told reporters that he hoped the new Prime Minister Najib Abdul Razak and Home Minister Hishamuddin Hussein would look into the matter.

“We need a police force that we can respect and look up to. I hope the new Cabinet ministers can clean up the police force,” he said.

PKR Youth vice-chief Khairul Annuar Zainudin urged Selangor police chief Khalid Abu Bakar to step down in view of the incident.

“This is the second case of severe police abuse in the span of a few months in Selangor. This does not instill confidence in the police force. We hope this is the last time this happens,” he said.
