No let-up in bashing of MACC, police

PKR de facto leader leader Anwar Ibrahim today claimed that Umno is using the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) to find fault with Pakatan Rakyat.

NONE "We will expose the cruelty and the abuse of power against Selangor leaders and the government," he said at a press conference in Parliament House today.

DAP leader Lim Kit Siang echoed Anwar's claims, saying that the MACC is Umno's "tool and cohort" in bringing down the Pakatan government in Selangor.

He said that MACC chief commissioner Ahmad Said Hamdan has not shown remorse over the death of DAP political aide Teoh Beng Hock.

Lim said he does not believe that the police are the right party to investigate Teoh’s death on July 16, in a fall from the building that houses the Selangor MACC in Shah Alam.

NONE "This is a high-profile case and we want a royal commission of inquiry. We do not trust investigations by the police,” he said.

"We hope that tomorrow's inquest will be stopped. We hope that the government will widen the scope of the Royal Commission of Inquiry.”

Instead of just looking into the investigations methods of the MACC, attention should also be given to the cause and circumstances of Teoh's death.

PAS leader Abdul Hadi Awang added that this is clearly a prevailing weakness in investigations.

They were speaking after a roundtable session that focused on the alleged failures of the police force.

High-level meetings sought

Pakatan leaders hope to have an immediate meeting with premier Najib Abdul Razak to discuss widening the scope of the inquiry; abolition of the Internal Security Act before a planned protest on Saturday; and termination of the contract of the inspector-general of police (IGP).

They will also request an audience with the Agong to bring up issues regarding the commission of inquiry and extension of the IGP’s service.

Among those who attended the Pakatan roundtable dialogue today were Zaid Ibrahim, Salahuddin Ayub, Nasharuddin Mat Isa, Azmin Ali, Dr Tan Seng Giaw and Elizabeth Wong.

Zaid, Salahuddin and Anthony Loke will now head the secretariat of their respective parties, while Azmin Ali, Nasharuddin and Tan have been elected chief whips.
