The Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission has cleared DAP's Jawi assemblyperson Tan Beng Huat of any wrongdoing in the purchase of a karaoke set for a society in his constituency.

Tan told reporters that that he had received a letter dated July 23 from the MACC clearing him of any graft practices.

NONE He added that the MACC letter stated that the case against him was closed.

"I will now make an application to the Chief Minister (Lim Guan Eng) to get back my undated letter of resignation," he told reporters in Penang.

Tan had submitted his resignation letter to Lim on June 11 indicating his willingness to vacate his seat should he be found guilty in connection with the then on-going graft probe against him.

He was investigated by the MACC following a report lodged by Nibong Tebal DAP divison chief Teh Hock Yong.

Teh had alleged Tan had misappropriated RM2,000 of state allocation when purchasing a karaoke set for a Nibong Tebal-based 'moral uplifting' society, the Persatuan Amal Chin Chee Kok.

Tan had immediately denied Teh's allegation and accused his rival of cooking up a story merely to embarrass him and the Pakatan Rakyat government because of "political jealousy".

Wants public apology now

He also countered that he had merely approved the allocation for the South Seberang Perai (SPS) district office to purchase a 39-inch television set, a DVD player and an air-conditioning unit.

NONE "I did not touch a single sen of the allocation," he had said then.

Following the report, MACC recorded statements from both Teh and Tan, who is Jawi's DAP Taman Berjaya branch chief.

Tan today said that MACC's decision to close the case showed that he was innocent.

He also said that he wanted Teh to apologise for making the graft accusation against him.

"I want him to apologise publicly in the next three days, failing which I will take legal actions against him," he said.
