Police report lodged against Pak Lah for false statements

An Internal Security Act detainees wife today lodged a police report against Home Affairs Minister Abdullah Ahmad Badawi for allegedly making false statements on six ISA detainees who went on a hunger strike recently.

The report, made by Aliza Jaafar who is the wife of Keadilan leader Saari Sungib, accused Abdullah who is also the deputy premier, of feeding inaccurate information, which tarnish the good name of the ISA detainees, to the public and the Malaysian Human Rights Commission (Suhakam).

The report was lodged with the Dang Wangi district police headquarters this morning.

His statements were to paint a wrong picture about the detainees, as if they were cheating the public about the hunger strike, she said.

She cited an example where Abdullah gave Suhakam officials an assurance on April 16 that an ISA detainee, Dr Badrulamin Bahron, was in good health when his condition was actually critical. A lawyer found out about the real situation the following day.

Honesty, objectivity and dedication

She added that Abdullah also made another false statement on April 19 when the minister claimed that Badrul and filmmaker-cum- malaysiakini columnist Hishamuddin Rais had ended their hunger strike.

The families found out two days later that the duo were in fact still going on a hunger strike even though their health had deteriorated to the extent of their receiving medical treatment at the detention centres clinic, she said.

Aliza urged the police to investigate her report with honesty, objectivity, and dedication.

The other ISA detainees who were also implicated by Abdullahs statements are Keadilan and leaders Tian Chua, Mohd Ezam Mohd Nor and Lokman Noor Adam. The group, often referred to as the ISA 6, was rounded up by police last April for allegedly trying to overthrow the government via militant means.

In June, they were sent to the Kamunting Detention Centre in Perak under the draconian ISA that permits indefinite detention without trial. They went on a hunger strike April 10, the anniversary of their arrest, to protest their incarceration.

The strike ended on Sunday afternoon when the six detainees began taking solid food brought by their families. Jailed former deputy premier Anwar Ibrahim pleaded two days earlier with the six to stop the strike for fear that their health may be compromised.

Another 15 supporters who staged a hunger strike at Taman Melewar, Kuala Lumpur have also ended their hunger strike.
