A high level civil servant is expected to be charged at the Shah Alam Sessions Court tomorrow with alleged corruption to the tune of RM10 million.

MACC sources told Malaysiakini that the man, a former secretary-general of a ministry, had allegedly committed the act of corruption in Petaling Jaya.

The high-ranking officer, 56, was arrested at the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission headquarters in Putrajaya this morning.

He has been under investigations for more than eight months over the alleged corrupt practice and as a result has been seconded to the Public Services Department pending investigations.

MACC, in a statement, said that the officer was arrested over his alleged wrongdoings in approving a land title for a project in Penang.

He is expected to face a number of charges relating to corruption.

The case against this ex-secretary-general - one Datuk AH - is a much needed boost for the MACC which is presently under tremendous pressure over the death of political aide Teoh Beng Huat while under its custody.

The MACC's previous big catch - Tourism Ministry director-general Mirza Mohammad Taiyab - was acquitted by the Kuala Lumpur Sessions Court without being called to enter his defence last July.

Mirza was charged by the MACC for allegedly receiving valuable gratification in the form of an expensive dental treatment as a public officer.

However judge Zainal Abidin Kamaruddin said the prosecution had failed to prove a prima facie case.

Similarly in August this year the High Court had also acquitted another big MACC catch - former minister Kasitah Gaddam - from corrupt practices and cheating charges arising from events in 1996.
