Opposition Leader Fadzil still in ICU
Opposition Leader and PAS president Fadzil Mohd Noor is still in the Intensive Care Unit (ICU), 24 hours after undergoing a heart by-pass operation at the Hospital Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia (HUKM).
HUKM director Prof Dr Zulkifli Ismail, when contacted at 4pm today by malaysiakini said: "He is recovering from the surgery, but has yet to be fully conscious from the effect of the anaesthetic. At the moment, we are monitoring him closely."
When asked, he said it was difficult to tell when the 65-year-old opposition leader was expected to fully recover to resume his duties.
DAP chairperson Lim Kit Siang, who visited Fadzil with several DAP members of parliament this afternoon, told reporters that "Fadzil's condition is still critical, but he is in good hands".
"He is recovering, but he may take some time to fully recover from this operation," he said.
Visitors
Fadzil's family members and his political secretary, Dr Mohd Hatta Ramli, have been keeping mum on his condition.
Several PAS supporters and family members were seen waiting outside the ICU ward, although only close family members were allowed in to see him.
Former PAS leader Nakhaei Ahmad, who has since joined Umno and is the Malaysian Islamic Foundation (Yadim) chairman, was among the visitors.
Fadzil, who is also Pendang MP, underwent a five-hour by-pass surgery from 8.30am yesterday.
He was at the hospital last Thursday for a follow-up routine check after his admission for chest pains on May 10 at the Kuala Terengganu Hospital.
His health condition is believed to have deteriorated by work stress, especially the party's general assembly meeting early this month.
