'I'm with one woman, but desire another...'

vox populi small thumbnail 'As a man I desire to have another wife but knowing that my wife is against polygamy, I have to sacrifice for the sake of the happiness of my family as a whole. It would not be easy for my family to accept another.'

The nightmare of polygamy

Ismail Saleh: Well, Mariam Mokhtar has the right to her own opinions. Polygamy has its advantages and disadvantages. Islam permits it.

If it is put to good use, then the practice is a noble one which helps both the man and women to share the love, comfort and security that matrimony provides. Many polygamous marriages do lead to sad endings due to lack of knowledge and lack of preparation.

As a man I desire to have another wife but knowing that my wife is against polygamy, I have to sacrifice for the sake of the happiness of my family as a whole.

It would not be easy for my family to accept another extended family since we are happy, cohesive and motivated individuals. I believe in empowering my family and I do not want to risk our relationship when polygamy is not acceptable to them.

For those who want to practice polygamy you need be mentally, spiritually and physically prepared, and be responsible.

Kama Mustaffa: Mariam's ‘grounds' marshaled to support her case come nowhere close to being evidence. She is trying too hard to make a point against polygamy, but you can clearly see that all the negativity that she portrayed in her article about polygamy has nothing to do with polygamy itself.

She is talking about gold diggers, HIV and many other things. But those things also occur in non-polygamous marriages.

In order to make a case, you have to make sure that the methods are non-judgmental and done empirically and in line with scientific method. She tends get emotional and subjective, rather objective and fact-finding.

I'm talking about polygamy according to Islam, not according to whims and fancy. If you really want to know about how it feels like to be in a polygamous marriage, ask those who are in it. Don't listen to people like Mariam who make conclusions based on assumptions.

Remember, women still have a choice. If they think that they are ill-treated, they can seek divorce. Polygamy is not designed to under-rate women. It is designed to protect women, and so that men can be responsible. Marriage is about responsibility, not lust.

Ringlet: Dear Mariam, thank you for sharing your thoughts on polygamy. As a non-Muslim observer, how could a man could fulfill in a fair manner the needs of all his wives materially, emotionally and physically?

Looks like all women in polygamous marriages get the raw deal, don't they? On the other hand, why would the second, third and fourth women go for a polygamous man?

Cool: Polygamy is nothing but approved lust. Men who do so have completely no excuse to practice it in any form as it has no benefits in this day and age. If it is allowed, then allow for the canning of these men should they abandon their first family or do not treat his wives equally. I have seen dozens of women abandoned with mouths to feed and no way to do so.

Abandoning or mistreating your family for the purpose of marrying another is nothing short of disgusting. It hurts my heart to see famous and rich men abandon their first family to start another.

Ezilan: Let's let women who can satisfy those same conditions as imposed on men take four husbands. Or are women too inferior and stupid to be able to maintain four husbands?

Zulkifli in politburo's crosshairs

Kgan: It is better to lose one MP than to lose the general election. Zulkifli Noordin is so extreme that PAS wouldn''t even touch him in the last general election.

Barisan Nasional withdrew their lawsuit against him for election malpractice when they had a good chance of winning because they realised that if they continued with the lawsuit, they would be doing the opposition a favour.

Christ Follower: An MP is elected by all races and not by one particular race. Therefore, Zulkifli must not be fanatic and arrogant. If he keep on speaking against Pakatan, people will lose confidence and the coalition will suffer in the 13th general election.

Ferdtan: I n the 2008 general election, Zulkifli was voted in ahead of Umno’s Abdul Aziz Sheik Fadzir partly due to Chinese adversity to the extremist Umno candidate. The 18.6% Kulim Bandar Baru Chinese will not make the same mistake again.

If no action is taken by PKR this will not affect Kulim seat alone but the whole country. DSAI (Anwar Ibrahim), we are waiting to see what action that you take. If you can't solve or afraid to solve this simple case of indiscipline then I don't see you have the means to go for Putrajaya. It pains our heart to hit out at you, DSAI, but it's either Zulkifili go or we let you go.

Bosco Philip Anthony: Zulkifli is like a bull that enters a china shop and thereafter brings the shop down along with him.

David Dass: Khalid is the most articulate spokesman for the PAS position on the ‘Allah’ matter. The objective is to isolate and discredit him. Other voices of moderation should assert themselves. I am surprised at the relative silence from the BN side. I would have thought that on an issue like this there should be free and open discussion.

Doc: It is good for these so-called Umno moles in PKR (e.g Zulkifli) and PAS (e.g Hasan Ali) to create problems in the early stages and not just before the elections as Pakatan needs to weed out these trouble makers early and replace them with credible, progressive and ethical leaders like Khalid Samad. No loss to these moles too. Having shown their allegiance to their true masters, I'm sure Umno will be more then happy to let them run under their banner in the next election.

Ex-Gerak president joins PKR

Cks: Has Mohd Nazree Mohd Yunus apologised to Menteri Besar Khalid Ibrahim for his actions not too long ago? Has he openly declared that his report against MB Khalid was wrong? What has Gerak achieved under him?

David: Why make a big fuss out of some shifting ‘lalang' (grass) joining PKR. If I were PKR, I'd keep quiet about it, if only to avoid calling attention to the shame of making a big fuss over a lalang .

Changeagent: By all means, welcome him with open arms into the PKR fold. But there is definitely no need to place him in a leadership position until he has earned his credentials. Then all doubts can be removed surrounding his questionable anti-Pakatan Rakyat past.

X'roy: Be wary of Trojan horses. People joining PKR must go through a rigorous induction process to ensure that there are no ulterior motives and are not planted by Umno. We all know how Umno operates, and Anwar for sure knows better than all of us.

Wira: If Mohd Nazree does not join PKR, which party should he join then? Umno?
