Local elections: Umno scores own goal
'The states should carry on with their own local elections with international independent election monitors. I am sure the rakyat will agree.'
EC can't hold local polls for Penang, S'gor
Eugene : This is exactly the response that Pakatan Rakyat need, so the real blame can be pinned unto the Election Commission (EC) and the federal government for not being able to hold local government elections.
MKini Reader: Acts of Parliament and state enactments are laws subservient to the constitution. What the constitution has enabled, Parliament and state assemblies cannot disable. Section 10 of the Local Government Act 1976 is thus unconstitutional and interested parties could apply to have the offending provision struck out.
I believe any citizen should qualify as an interested party, not to mention state governments as well. However, with things the way there are, the courts are likely to decide the way the ruling party would want them to.
An alternative is to have elections without the participation of the EC. The Penang and Selangor government could invite nominations, set the campaigning period and polling day, use any of the polling websites or software, set up connected computers in public places, allow those whose names are in the electoral roll to vote, and appoint those with the highest votes to be councilors.
Tan Kian Khim: Dear Chief Minister Lim Guan Eng and Menteri Besar Khalid Ibrahim, just as everyone predicted, the EC lackeys would obstruct the holding of local elections due to the intense fear and election paranoia of their Umno-BN masters.
The EC forgets itself - the third vote is a fundamental democratic right of the people.
Time to activate Plan B - Penang and Selangor should go ahead and hold the elections anyway, by appointing a respected independent elections observer (for example, Malaysia for Free and Fair Election - Mafrel) to conduct the elections. Penang's two municipal council elections would be a good place to start, offering a manageable first stage for the re-introduction of the third vote.
It is time to cut through partisan official obstructionism.
Doc: I expected this response from the EC. After all, the main function of the EC is to protect Umno/BN's interest. I'm sure the EC would have consulted their masters at Umno and, after intense deliberation, Umno would have provided the EC with a reason to inform the rakyat as to why local elections can't be held.
What I was looking forward to was the "out-of-this-world-stupid-reason" that Umno would have conjured up for the EC to inform the rakyat why local election can't be held. Anyhow, Umno has scored an own goal with this local election issue, and Pakatan has won hands-down.
Lim Chong Leong: The states should carry on with their own local elections with international independent election monitors. I am sure the rakyat will agree. They can also implement automatic voter registration to ensure fair elections. The only thing to fear is the Umno police force and their crowd control.
EC: Titi Tinggi state seat not vacant yet
Cks: Election Commission chief Abdul Aziz Yusof, you have erred. You should have said: after the Speaker of the state assembly notified us of his resignation, we will interview Yip Sun Onn to confirm that he has indeed resigned and has not acted under duress... only then will we call for a by-election.
Wasn't this done when the Perak Speaker notified the EC of the resignations of the three Perak froggies ?
Beetle: Maybe it's the norm now for BN MPs or state assembly members to threaten to quit and the leaders to rush to persuade them not to. Is there another deal made to retain this state assembly? Or is BN so afraid to face the opposition in a by-election that they would rather go all out to please keep their MPs and state assembly members?
Chua: I'm not afraid of Ka Ting
Habib RAK: Yes, Dr Chua Soi Lek, you are not afraid. When you decided to have extra-marital affairs, you were not afraid of your loved ones and the moral position expected out of a public person who enjoys public support. Yes, you are a person who will do want you think is right for you. You also have no shame left to come back to seek public support again.
A person who repents will continue to do public service, but from behind the veil. You lost the right to lead when you transgressed.
Surely you know that Umno will use your ‘unnatural sex' against you to make you toe the line. How can you champion any cause that is not to the fancy of Umno? Why do you keep abusing the support from public to mislead them?
Multi Racial: Yes, you are right. You are not afraid of anyone including your wife and children. You can do what you like with your family and not afraid of them. That we can understand as it is your family matter. Please don't bring Malaysians into this. Excuse yourself and get out of politics.
Unless you have no shame, continue with what you are doing. Maybe MCA delegates are dumb or corrupted enough to elect someone like you to be their president. When that happen, Malaysians will make sure you remain (only as) MCA president and have nothing (else) to do with this country.
Singa Pura Pura: Chua, being not afraid is admirable, usually, though not invariably. But what is the meaning and significance of bravery or cowardice in the context of Chinese Malaysians and the MCA? Is the history of the MCA not one of increasing exponential irrelevance vis-a-vis the community it seeks to represent?
Throughout the harrowing history of MCA leadership struggles, one will find that the contenders were always deeply divided: on the one side, there were the ‘timorous souls' who were too fearful to truly represent their community. On the other side, there were the ‘bold spirits' who were ready to stand up if justice so required.
Was is not unfortunate for the Chinese Malaysians that the regressive side always prevailed? There are different kinds of bravery, Chua. There's the bravery of thinking of one's community and country before one's self and family.
Who amongst the three protagonists has that - let him prevail.
Pasir Mas MP denies holding Ascot Sports shares
Dood: Ibrahim Ali, I think allegations of you owning shares in a gaming company is the least of your worries, if you're so concerned about your reputation. I mean, being a racist and a traitor to the Malaysian race is a much bigger problem, I'd say.
