Keretapi Tanah Melayu Berhad (KTMB) is looking at the possibility of segregating passengers on its commuter trains, said its president Dr Aminuddin Adnan.

He said a survey by KTMB revealed that females constituted the majority of passengers in commuter trains (60 per cent).

Besides gender segregation, KTMB was also looking at providing separate coaches for families and senior citizens, he told reporters after launching the company's Customer Service Star Award 2009 and Ikhlas Dari Hati' (Sincere From The Heart) programmes here today.

However, Dr Aminuddin said the matter would have to be studied in detail before being implemented to avoid future complications but noted that gender segregation in mass rapid transport systems had already been implemented in Japan and several European countries.

On another matter, he said users of KTMB's commuter train service soon will have trains running at frequencies of 7.5 minutes, once an additional 38 Electric Multiple Units (EMUs) were added to the existing livery. - Bernama
