HONG KONG - A group of Asian migrant workers in Hong Kong staged a protest today against Malaysia's forced deportation of illegal Filipino and Indonesian migrants.

Some 60 protesters marched to the Malaysian consulate demanding "justice for all migrants" and criticised Prime Minister Dr Mahathir Mohamad for introducing tough laws against migrant workers.

Eman Villanueva, secretary general of United Filipinos in Hong Kong which spearheaded the protests, condemned the deportation of the migrants, which he claimed had caused severe physical, emotional, and mental trauma to the expelled workers.

He said the forced deportation had led to the deaths of 19 infants and children.

Hundreds were subjected to dehydration, malnutrition and other illnesses due to the conditions in Malaysian detention camps, Villanueva said.
