Malaysia mulls national service for youths

KUALA LUMPUR — Malaysia would study the possibility of introducing national service for its youths to instil greater patriotism and self-discipline, a minister said today.

Defence Minister Najib Razak said national service need not be in the form of military training as this may not be suitable for the country's needs.

"National service is a good idea to instil patriotism and national strength apart from forging national unity and integration," he was quoted as saying by Bernama news agency. No specific details of a proposal were given.

Varied features

"What can be considered is the form of national service most suitable for our country as there are several forms and features of the national service," he said.

The proposal was made yesterday at the end of a three-day National Patriotism Congress attended by members of parliament. Neighbouring Singapore already requires that males put in national service.

Prime Minister Mahathir Mohamad said the service could boost racial integration, and has promised to bring the matter to cabinet for discussion. — AFP
