Penang Gerakan chairperson Teng Hock Nan today conceded that he will quit the chairmanship if the proposed emergency general meeting passed a motion seeking his resignation.

teng hock nan comments on egm 160910 During his speech at the party’s state annual general meeting in Penang this morning, Teng ( right ) said he viewed the Oct 10 EGM “positively”.

He noted that the party has attracted much publicity over the calls for him to quit, made by a group dubbed ‘voice of the grassroots’, who has collected 60 signatures for the EGM.

“But it (the publicity) is not necessarily bad; it shows within the party we have differences of opinion but we are committed to resolve the problem,” he said.

“If the motion (for me to quit) is passed in the EGM, I will go, but I will still work with the new chairman,” he vowed.

“If the motion is not carried, I also appeal to everyone to work together with BN to fight for 1Malaysia and fight against an Islamic government which will implement the hudud law,” he added.

The leadership crisis has plagued the party even before the March 2008 general election when Gerakan lost state power to Pakatan Rakyat.

Calls for Teng to quit the party was stepped up when the ‘voice of the grassroots’ group submitted 60 signatures urging for an EGM to act decisively on removing Teng.

Yesterday, Geraklah spokesperson Yeap Ban Choon reaffirmed the group’s stand to hold the EGM to pass a motion of no-confidence against Teng.

Meanwhile, Teng, urged delegates to attend the EGM.

teng hock nan comments on egm 160910 penang gerakan headquarter “I am of the opinion that if the EGM is the only means to resolve the problems within the party, then I appeal to all members to attend the meeting on Oct 10,” he told the 200 delegates at the meeting.

“I fully hope our delegates will come forward and preserve the reputation and kewibawaan (credibility) of our party,” he added.

Teng also said that in the past year, the party had faced many challenges, internally, from component parties as well as from its political opponents.

The former Pulau Tikus assemblyperson added that since the famous 308 (general election), several members have left the party due to conflict of ideas relating to appointment of posts in the party.

“But due to the support and motivation from members, the party has agreed to continue the struggle with increased spirit guided by ideology,” he said.
