Anwar Ibrahim's sodomy trial in the High Court in Kuala Lumpur today will see the three doctors from Hospital Kuala Lumpur (HKL) cross-examined by lead defence lawyer Karpal Singh.

However, the order in which the three - general surgeon Dr Mohd Razali Ibrahim, forensic pathologist Dr Siew Sheue Feng and specialist surgeon Dr Khairul Nizam Hassan - will be called is not known yet as at last night, the matter was yet to be finalised by Anwar's defence team.

Karpal had earlier asked for all three doctors to testify first before cross-examining them.

Two Australian experts - criminology professor and forensic specialist Dr David Wells and DNA specialist Dr Brian McDonald - will be on hand today to assist the defence team in court.

At the last session on Oct 14, Siew, the third witness in the trial, testified that complainant and star witness Mohd Saiful Bukhari Azlan had told him he was sodomised by a high-profile individual without a condom . Saiful had also said that he was sodomised by Anwar on numerous occasions over a period of time.

Siew had also told the court that the last encounter was on June 26, 2008, and the sodomy act was committed without the use of force, which may contradict Saiful's earlier testimony that the incident was non-consensual.

Other discrepancies in the KLH's medical report by the three doctors will also be scrutinised today.

The doctors’ medical report, despite they having received the chemist's report two days earlier, states that “there was no conclusive proof of penetration”.

However, the doctors changed their stand in court, testifying instead that the semen samples found in Saiful's rectum were proof of penile penetration.

IPU questions proceedings

azlan Earlier this month, the Geneva-based Inter-Parliamentary Union (IPU) unanimously passed a resolution condemning the on-going trial .

According to the international group, the prosecution's case had been compromised and it called for the proceedings to be halted.

The IPU made the decision after its Committee on the Human Rights of Parliamentarians received a 24-page report from Queens Counsel Mark Trowell, an independent observer.

Lawyer Sankara Nair told Malaysiakini that the defence had yet to file possible contempt proceedings against two former Anwar aides - Rahimi Osman and Rasid Rosli - as the defence had yet to gain all the necessary documents.
