The Public Accounts Committee (PAC) is satisfied that the federal ministries and government departments performance had improved, based on the 2009 Auditor-General’s Report.

Azmi told reporters this after PAC was given a three-hour briefing by the audit committee at Parliament house today.

He said that the audit committee had also spoke on the weaknesses of several ministries and departments, but he was unwilling to divulge the identities of those being criticised.

Some improvement noted

"Seventy-eight departments received three-star rating, it was 71 last year and those who scored less have decreased. It used to be 15 but it's only eight. Generally the performance last year is better than the year before.

"The audit report has highlighted the the weaknesses and PAC has been briefed and we will meet the ministries and the agencies for explanations," said Azmi, adding that they will probe into the ministries with the worst financial disciplines.

He hoped that the other ministries and departments will strive to achieve four-star ratings.

The PAC will meet again in a couple days to set a date and decide on the ministries and its agencies to be called in.

The 2009 Auditor-General's Report highlighted that the National Audit Department carried out audits on 25 federal ministries and 44 federal departments to determine whether the financial management of these institutions.

However, the results of the audit showed that some of the federal ministries and departments were not serious in financial management even though their weaknesses had been repeatedly reported and brought to their attention, stated the synopsis of the audit report.
