PKR vice-president and candidate for deputy president Mustaffa Kamil Ayub is to hand over a memorandum of protest to the election committee overseeing the party polls.

“We are giving them 48 hours to postpone or call off the elections.

NONE “The elections have so far seen 162 complaints of malpractice. The committee cannot ignore this,” he said.

In the memorandum, he will raise questions on the system of holding party elections, claiming this was very far from what the delegates had hoped for when they passed the resolution for direct elections at the last PKR annual congress.

“The main failure of the election committee is to defend the principles of clean, free and fair elections.

“A lot of questions have been raised about the integrity of the committee and there have been more than 162 complaints on the actions of certain committee members who have been biased and even fraudulent,” Mustaffa said in a statement issued at a press conference at former PKR leader Zaid Ibrahim’s house.

His press conference was held just before Zaid started his, in which the ex-Umno stalwart and former law minister called on PKR leaders Anwar Ibrahim and Azmin Ali to step down.

Option to withdraw from race ‘still open’

Asked if he would also withdraw from the race if his memorandum was not entertained, Mustaffa said that he would “think about it”.

“The option is open for everything. But one thing for sure, I will definitely not be quitting the party.

NONE “I love the party and I love their struggle. I will continue to fight for the party,” said the member of 12 years.

“But for now, there is no harm in postponing the elections, which have been ill-prepared in the first place. Just put off for a short while, until all the candidates are more confident with the election process."

Mustaffa had previously raised a hue and cry over the party elections, claiming fraud and irregularities.

He added that he would meet with president Dr Wan Azizah Wan Ismail over the matter today.
