In response to the WikiLeaks expose of a US State Department cable against Anwar Ibrahim, PKR communications director Nik Nazmi Nik Ahmad said the disclosure only goes to show that the conspiracy against the opposition leader stems from the highest levels.

btn forum 241209 nik nazmi Nik Nazmi, who is also Seri Setia state assemblyperson, said what is “more shocking” is that the Singapore leadership has chosen to partake in this decision to conspire against Anwar by deliberately spreading disinformation” to the Australia’s intelligence.

“We must ask why the Singaporean intelligence services chose to collude with Malaysia’s Special Branch in spreading such lies about Anwar,” said the PKR supreme council member.

That Australia’s own parliamentarians and other members of the international community have questioned the integrity of the prosecution against Anwar only heightens such suspicions, Nik Nazmi added.  

“It should furthermore be pointed out that the cables exposed by WikiLeaks are essentially information collected by third parties – like Australia – that were then shared to the US State Department.

“As a result, the cables contain all manner of information – including personal opinions and hearsay, and hence are far from reliable,” Nik Nazmi said in a statement issued this afternoon.

Nik Nazmi hoped that the "technical intelligence" mentioned in WikiLeaks could be revealed to the public since that was the basis that the Singaporean intelligence claimed led to their conclusion.

“At the end of the day, the current campaign of persecution and vilification against Anwar is no different from the first: both rely on the abuse of the judicial process and only the reliance of flimsy medical evidence by the persecution.

“This, if nothing else should prove that this case is politically motivated and engendered by a conspiracy at the highest levels.”

'Singapore against Anwar'

Meanwhile, PKR deputy president Azmin Ali also called the expose “misinformation” by the Special Branch that proves that Umno is desperate to quash the “rise of the people” by destroying Anwar’s credibility and political career.

On his blog today, Azmin also said that PKR has long been aware of the cooperation between the Malaysia's Special Branch and the Singapore's intelligence.

NONE That cooperation has not been concerned so much with regional security as the means to achieve the political ends of both governments' leaders.

Azmin ( right ) accused Singapore leaders, including Minister Mentor Lee Kuan Yew, of opposing Anwar’s leadership.

They do not want to see Pakatan Rakyat take control of Putrajaya, alleged Azmin, for fear that it would affect their political standing in the region.

“They prefer Umno-BN’s leadership because this corrupt leadership will kneel to all of Singapore’s demands,” he said.

The PKR deputy president said the WikiLeaks episode nevertheless highlights that the allegations against Anwar was a trap, as noted by the Office of National Assessment of Australia.

“This belief arises from close attention by Australian senior lawyer Mark Terence Trowell QC and statements by senator Nick Xenophon, the Australian independent MP who represents 60 senators, that dispute the procedures of the trial against Anwar as a clear violation of the basic principles of justice,” said Azmin.

'Give us facts'

In PKR’s official statement on the matter, party secretary-general Saifuddin Nasution Ismail said the party would have welcomed new facts from Wikileaks - rather than “sensationalised personal opinions” - that would have provided factual insights and “guarantee (that) justice will be preserved in a fair and just trial”.

“PKR views seriously any attempt by any party to make political capital out of the leaked US State Department cable published by WikiLeaks.”

He said the remarks represented a “broad criticism of (Singapore's) foreign officials against Malaysia, with nobody being spared.”

Not only Anwar, noted Saifuddin, but other regional leaders, including Najib, were criticised.

“PKR maintains that those views and assessments are their own personal views that do not contain any facts - otherwise Prime Minister Najib Razak will have a tough time explaining similarly damaging allegations against him made,” he said.

Saifuddin instead called for a fair trial for Anwar to “settle the case once and for all”.

“Malaysians have been dragged into this mud-slinging for a generation and are very keen to move on,” he said.
