Special screening of movie by ISA detainee tomorrow
The public will have a rare chance to enjoy a movie made by
malaysiakini
columnist-cum-film-maker Hishamuddin Rais, who was arrested and detained under the Internal Security Act two years ago.
Billed as Malaysia's first road movie, Dari Jemapoh ke Manchestee is about two young boys from a village in Negeri Sembilan who travel to England to realise their respective dreams of meeting a long-lost father and watching a European Cup match.
According to Abolish ISA Movement (AIM), the special film screening tomorrow is to commemorate the second anniversary of Hishamuddin's
arrest
, whose detention without trial has just entered its third year.
The government alleged that he and five other reformasi activists were part of a conspiracy to overthrow the government by 'militant means'.
Apart from Hishamuddin, those detained were Keadilan leaders, Ezam Mohamad Noor, Tian Chua, Saari Sungip, Dr Badrulamin Baharon and Lokman Noor Adam.
The six have been declared by Amnesty International as prisoners of conscience.
Danger, fun and failure
Made in 1998, three years after former student activist Hishamuddin returned from political exile, Dari Jemapoh ke Manchestee was about two best friends - Yadi and Mafiz.
Yadi, a fan of Manchester United whose idol is George Best, dreams of watching his favourite football team play, while Mafiz dreams of meeting his father in Liverpool.
Together they set off in a borrowed red Volvo to Manchester and along the way encountered danger, fun and failure. The film is in Bahasa Malaysia with English subtitles. The special screening of Dari Jemapoh ke Manchestee will begin at 8.30pm on April 16 at the Selangor Chinese Assembly Hall, Kuala Lumpur.
The entrance ticket is priced at RM10 and are available at the hall. All proceeds from the event will go AIM's anti-ISA campaign.
