A body representing taxi operators, Malaysian Taxi Executives, wants the Home Ministry to act now on the Bersih 2.0 rally on free and fair elections planned for July 9 by arresting those behind it under the Internal Security Act.

"Otherwise, what is the use of the ISA?” its president Azmi Md Yatim ( right ) said this afternoon, after the association lodged a report against the rally at the Dang Wangi police station.

Malaysian Limousine and Hired Car Drivers and Operators Association deputy president Mohd Sharil Abdul Aziz, who made the police report jointly with Azmi, said the rally would drive away foreign tourists and ruin their business.

Sharil said if the police set up roadblocks on all the main pathways of Kuala Lumpur two days before the rally, the people would not travel by taxi.

A taxi driver normally earned about RM150 a day, he said, that would mean over the three days the 31,000 taxi drivers around Klang Valley would lose about RM450 each during that period.

Sharil said that he also objected to right-wing Malay rights group Perkasa wanting to hold a protest against Bersih on the same day.

Earlier today, the Selangor Puteri Umno also lodged a police report against the Bersih rally, Bernama reported.

The report was made by Selangor Puteri Umno chief Suhaila M Zin at the Shah Alam police headquarters in Section 9 at 9.40am.

Suhaila urged the police to stop the rally, saying it would affect public order and the country's economy.

Yesterday, police told the organisers of the Bersih rally, scheduled to be held Kuala Lumpur as well as in Sabah and Sarawak, to cancel the event as it would disrupt public order.
