An opposition MP today questioned what he claimed is the unwarranted interference by the police in politics, demanding that the Home Ministry answer the allegations.

NONE “If this is true then the police are being unprofessional and meddling in politics,” said Mujahid Yusof Rawa (PAS-Parit Buntar) ( right ) who broached the issue while debating the 2012 Budget.

He related that he had received a letter in an unmarked envelope from an unknown source who sent it to him via a third party.

“Maybe he was concerned about his safety,” said Mujahid in a press conference in the Parliament lobby afterward, showing the letter to journalists present.

The letter which he said resembled “an authentic police communique”, was an order allegedly signed by a deputy superintendent of police, who is the adjutant of a General Operations Force brigade, on behalf of the brigade commander.

As can be seen from the document, the order tasked all department heads to collect signatures from senior officers, civilian staff, family members and spouses of policemen as well as retirees in a petition to protest against a statement by PAS deputy president Mohamad Sabu.

The directive also stated that all collected signatures must be returned to the adjutant before Sept 22, “without fail”, and in the standard format included with the communique.

While it was not stated what statement of Mohamad’s that the protest is against, it is probable that this has to do with Mohamad’s statement that touched on Mat Indera and the attack on Bukit Kepong.

Mujahid added that the letter may have been sent by some police officers who were “uneasy” with the orders.

He said that a note attached to the letter had asked that Pakatan Rakyat highlight the matter in the House.

“If this is true, then the police are not being professional and there appears to be a great plot against Mohamad to create a political incident and the police are instrumental in it. The Home Ministry must clarify..The minister (Hishammuddin Hussein) must answer, as this is a smear on the integrity of the police.”

He posited that the case against Mohamad is a set-up to create political trouble for the PAS deputy president.

“As for his statement, let the politicians answer. Why must the police answer? They should only take the reports, they need not intervene,” the Parit Buntar MP concluded.
