Former Selangor PAS chief Hasan Ali today accepted the title of 'saviour' of the Malay-Muslims bestowed upon him by Umno-owned daily Utusan Malaysia last week.

“If I am the person who is believed to be able to unite the Malays and Muslims, then I am ready to take up that burden," he told a press conference at his residence in Kuala Lumpur today.

“Indeed, unity has always been my mission and purpose in life ever since my time in the government (in the past), as a motivator and now as a politician.”

    

Quizzed about the unity agenda between Umno and PAS, he said that he would continue to pursue it as he believes it is one that must be pursued.

"The (unity) efforts must be continued, that is my purpose here.

"The very reason for my existence is to unite humans in the worship of Allah."

While saying he blamed himself, his group and other persons in charge for not seeing the union through, he sees no problem with trying harder in the future.

But he believes that unity is an agenda that is beyond race, religion and partisan lines, as demanded not only by Islam and other religions but also in nation-building.

“PAS-Umno unity is just a small part of the larger whole,” he explained.

Hasan also expressed hope that he would be nominated to serve on high-level committees that moot issues of national unity.

“Yes, on committees at the state level, or better still at the federal level. The best would be the ministry of national unity or PM's Department.”

“I have a lot of remedies that I have tested on a small scale and believe will help to unite Malaysians,” Hasan voiced out.

'Political situation is fluid'  

However, he does not see any reason for such an appointment to interfere with his party affiliations.

He will not leave PAS even if he is appointed by the premier to such a committee.

Asked what he planned to do if not nominated to contest for PAS and if he would contest under another partiy or as an Independent, he said the political situation was fluid and might change on any given day.

He said he would cross that bridge when the time came.

“Only time and situations will determine that, but whatever it is, it will be according to my personal principles, that is Malay, Islam and the monarchy,” he added.
