A non-government organisation held a brief protest outside the Ampang Jaya police station yesterday to demand action against the police personnel responsible for the fatal shooting of a 23-year-old golf caddy.

The Indian Consultative Council (ICC) also filed a police report against Selangor police chief Mohd Noor Hamat, Ampang Jaya police chief Azmi Hashim and other personnel involved in the shooting of P Nagendran on Jan 13.

Some 20 people, including relatives of the deceased, participated in the 10-minute demonstration, led by Keadilan supreme council member N Gobalakrishnan.

"We the people, demand that the police shooting of innocent people be stopped immediately. We want the police who killed Nagendren to be investigated and sacked," the opposition leader told reporters.

He also warned that bigger demonstrations and legal action would follow if the police failed to act on the matter.

A commotion broke out when a policeman stopped the group from entering the police station to lodge the report as he was instructed to allow only two people in.

This infuriated the demonstrators and a shouting match ensued between them and several plainclothes policemen.

"This is public property, why can't we all enter?" exclaimed Gobalakrishnan.

The policemen then relented and allowed the group to march into the compound but only permitted two of them to enter the building to file their report.

Meanwhile, Gobalakrishnan said ICC will also raise the case with the newly formed Police Royal Commission.

'Tortured and killed'

According to reports, Nagendran was shot when the driver of the lorry he was travelling in with four others attempted to ram into a patrol car in Pandan Indah.

The police personnel claimed that they had ordered the lorry to pull over when they saw the men behaving suspiciously, but this was ignored.

A chase then ensued and repeated orders to stop also went unheeded. The patrol car then overtook the lorry and six shots were fired, killing Nagendran on the spot. The rest were arrested.

Police later claimed that knives and metal rods were recovered from the vehicle.

However, Nagendran's pregnant widow C Jaya Malar, 20, claimed that this version was fabricated and alleged that her husband was murdered.

In a police report on Jan 16, she said there were witnesses who told her that a person was gunned down at the nearby Pandan Perdana flats and his body was later brought to where the lorry was.

Jaya Malar ( photo ), who also has a six-month-old daughter, further alleged that when she saw her husband's body at the hospital, it was covered with bruises and his fingernails were pulled out.

A coalition of opposition and NGO groups had also submitted a memorandum to Inspector-General of Police (IGP) Mohd Bakri Omar demanding an explanation regarding this case.
