PAS environment bureau chief Zulkefly Mohmad Omar today slammed Pahang Menteri Besar Adnan Yaakob for ridiculing the people's struggle against the controversial Lynas rare earth plant in Gebeng.

"He is ridiculing the rakyat. As if the rakyat’s demands is a small matter. The impact of this project is very big for the residents in the area," he said at a press conference at the PAS headquarters in Kuala Lumpur this morning.

NONE Zulkefly (centre in photo) was referring to Adnan's comments on next weekend’s planned rally by environmentalist groups to oppose the operation of Lynas' RM250million rare-earth processing plant in Gebeng, Kuantan.

English daily Star had reported Adnan welcoming the rally , saying cheekily "the more the merrier" as it would contribute to Pahang tourism, and that he might consider joining protest.

Kuatan MP Fuziah Salleh had said if this was the case, a permit from the government for the peaceful rally on Feb 26 should be forthcoming.

‘Your jeer, our motivation’

Adnan’s jeer, said Zulkefly, will only motivate PAS members to attend the rally in downtown Kuantan.

Commenting on Prime Minister Najib Abdul Razak's statement that the government will allow the rally to go ahead, Zulkifli said, "For us, this is not just about allowing or not.”

“He has to listen to the people’s voice, those who will be affected by this plant, our demand is for the plant to be stopped immediately.”

Meanwhile, Stop Lynas Save Malaysia coalition chairperson Andansura Rabu urged the people of Pahang to make a stand by participating in the rally next Sunday.

“We hope the people of Pahang will stand with us at the Green Rally... the Stop Lynas Save Malaysia coalition, together with other environmental groups, wants to state our stand that the project must stop,” he said.

Andansura, who is also Badan Bertindak Anti Rare Earth Refinery (Badar) director, added that the rally will see several groups with their own environmental issues such as in Rawang and Bukit Koman coming together.
