Ho Heng Tong, 53, got the shock of his life after checking his voter registration status on the Election Commission’s (EC) website last week, when he found that his name was removed as the National Registration Department (NRD) had listed him as deceased.

According to Subang MP R Sivarasa, who revealed the matter at a press conference in Parliament House, Ho, who is a voter in his constituency, lodged a police report on the matter and then tried to re-register at  the post office but was rejected as his name was apparently in the system.

Ho, who had already voted six times before prior to being declared dead, then went to the Putrajaya and Federal Territories EC offices to prove that he is very much alive and demand reinstatement on the electoral rolls.

NONE While acknowledging that Ho is still alive, EC officials however told him to register as a new voter and refused to reinstate him into the current role.

However, when Sivarasa (right) went with him to the EC again, they commission relented and allowed Ho to be reinstated as a voter in the Subang constituency.

“The EC official who was very candid, explained that there are other cases of voters erroneously declared dead by the NRD,” related the Subang MP.

Sivarasa said that the EC chairperson must explain to Ho and others who have been declared dead, while being very much alive, how this can happen.

“How is a person declared dead and his or her name removed from the roll? There must be documentation and there must be procedure,” insisted the parliamentarian.
