The  Bersih steering committee has hit out at PAS leader Nasharudin Mat Isa for criticising Ambiga Sreenevasan as being unfit to lead the coalition for clean and fair elections.

NONE “Who is Nasharudin? Who is he?” exclaimed steering committee member Maria Chin Abdullah (left) , when asked to comment.

“Bersih is a coalition of 84 NGOs and growing, it is not a political organisation. The NGOs will determine who shall lead (it).”

Nasharudin’s remark came in the wake of Ambiga’s support for the lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender (LGBT) community.

Speaking at an anti-LGBT forum themed ‘LGBT Mengundang Bala Allah’ at Universiti Teknologi Mara yesterday, the PAS central committee member had also said that those who supported homosexuality should be regarded as threat to society.

“Based on an edict by (prominent Muslim cleric) Yusof al-Qardhawi, one cannot eat or drink with them, let alone be a follower,” said Nasharudin, who is also the chairperson of Fiqh Contemporary Studies Centre.

His comments were widely reported by the mainstream dailies, particularly Malay-language newspapers Utusan Malaysia , Sinar Harian and Berita Harian .
