Malaysia’s most sexist statements and actions will be named at an awards ceremony in Kuala Lumpur tomorrow, the gender rights coalition Joint Action Group for Gender Equality (JAG) announced.

The group, comprising prominent gender action NGO, is organising its inaugural ‘Aiyoh... Wat Lah?! Awards!’ that will recognise “the most sexist, misogynistic, homophobic and/or transphobic statements or actions as reported by the media in 2011".

Six awards will recognise the most outrageous statements made, while a seventh will recognise a progressive statement or action.

NONE “Through this annual event, JAG intends to spur public interest on what constitutes sexism, misogyny, homophobia and transphobia, and to encourage higher standards of behaviour from public figures and institutions in relation to gender and sexuality,” the organisers said in a statement.

With the past year ripe for picking, some prominent names are in hot contention for the awards, particularly Rembau MP Khairy Jamaluddin ( left ) for his jibe on the smear campaign against Penang Chief Minister Lim Guan Eng’s son, which played with a pun on Kampung Buah Pala.

Minister in the Prime Minister’s Department Nazri Abdul Aziz won the honour of receiving two nominations, one for calling homosexuality “unconstitutional”.

The othger is for Nazri's infamous description of BN partner MCA as “a wife who complains all day long that she was being abused, raped and not given enough food, but yet does not want to divorce her husband”.

Other contenders for the 'awards' include Kinabatangan MP Bung Mokhtar Radin, Penang Gerakan chief Teng Hock Nan and Kedah Gerakan Youth chief Tan Keng Liang.

The event takes place tomorrow at Pasar Seni Annexe Gallery’s Art for Grabs and will be hosted by “the irrepressible” Miss Ribena Berry.

JAG comprises the All Women's Action Society (Awam), Perak Women for Women Society (PWW), Persatuan Kesedaran Komuniti Selangor (Empower), Persatuan Sahabat Wanita Selangor (PSWS), Sabah Women’s Action Resource Group (Sawo), Sisters in Islam (SIS), Women's Aid Organisation (WAO) and Women’s Centre for Change, Penang (WCC).
