The 'PKR' car number plate, seen as the acronym for the opposition Parti Keadilan Rakyat, has failed to stir interest among both PKR leaders and members of the public.

According to the bidding results announced yesterday, a Penang Chinese businessman by the name of Ong Thai Yang purchased 'PKR 1' for RM99,555 - the highest bidding price for a 'PKR' number.

This is in stark contrast to 'MCA 1' and 'WWW 1' , which were sold at RM300,100 and RM520,000 respectively, the highest ever bidding prices for car numbers in Malaysia.

According to Sin Chew Daily , among the 384 successful bidders for PKR numbers, only three of them are PKR leaders.

Negeri Sembilan PKR chief and Teluk Kemang MP Kamarul Baharin Abbas purchased 'PKR 16' for RM3,000. Tanah Merah MP Amran Ab Ghani bought 'PKR 161' with RM600, while 'PKR401' went to Guchil assemblyperson Tuan Zamri Ariff Tuan Zakaria for RM400.

Kwong Wah Daily reported that Penang PKR chief and Penang deputy chief minister Mansor Othman had bid for three numbers but lost in all.

Penang Road Transport Department (JPJ) director Hassan Yaacob is quoted as saying that his department received only 623 bids for the PKR series, of which 384 bids were successful.

The response was far from the 'WWW' series, which attracted 18,243 bids, he said.

According to Hassan, numbers that received high bids included 'PKR 8', 'PKR 3', 'PKR 5' and 'PKR 2'.
