The EC deputy chairperson Wan Ahmad Wan Omar told Berita Harian that the rally organisers has ignored the commission's efforts in enhancing the electoral system.
He said 'Gabungan Janji', a coalition of 47 NGOs, is insincere and hides behind the names of NGOs to mock the EC and the nation's electoral system to confuse the people.
“It is better for the EC to pay attention to the preparation of the general election so we can provide the best management, and eventually the people will evaluate (our performance). The EC will continue to meet the people to explain.
“Based on public feedback, I can see they now understand the truth. The state EC will have meetings with political parties in every state beginning next month,” he said.
Wan Ahmad added that if 'Gabungan Janji' is sincere in demanding electoral reform, it should study all the matters done, studied and will be implemented by the EC.
The coalition will hold its 'Janji Demokrasi' gathering at the iconic Dataran Merdeka from 10pm to tomorrow to herald the 55th anniversary of Merdeka Day.
The group urged participants to turn up in yellow in order to state their protest against the federal government for failing to fulfil its promise to reform the electoral process.
They plan to gather at the north-most point of Dataran Merdeka near a fountain, a stone's throw away from a federal government organised Merdeka Day eve countdown.
