The organisers of the Janji Demokrasi protest were today warned by inspector-general of police Ismail Omar not to disrupt the official Merdeka Day celebrations.

The organisers will have to abide by the recently passed Peaceful Assembly Act, he said.

"They also have to inform or give notice to the Dang Wangi OCPD of their intention. Hence, they have to fulfil this requirement. Most important of all, they should not disrupt the Merdeka Day celebrations," Ismail said.

"Merdeka Day is for all to rejoice and enjoy, regardless of their political affiliations. Put away all our differences including our ideology and use this opportunity to celebrate our independence.”

Ismail said there should not be other agendas but to celebrate the country’s independence and for us to appreciate the peace and security the country has achieved.

“My advise to the organisers is that we have laws in this country and they need to abide by the laws. There are already ample laws in the country, with Section 27 being replaced with the Peaceful Assembly Act and hence people should follow it,” said the IGP.

A number of non-governmental organisations plan to hold their Janji Demokrasi gathering at the edge of Dataran Merdeka tomorrow night, dressed in yellow, to press the government to keep its promises on electoral reform.
